Ten quick wins for small business websites

You don't need a developer for most of these. Each one helps real customers.

  1. Describe your photos. In your editor's image settings, add a short description: "Technician repairing a dishwasher". Skip phrases like "image of".
  2. Make "Call" and "Book" buttons say so. An icon alone reads as "button" to a screen reader.
  3. Check your text colour. Light grey on white is the most common problem we see. Darken it.
  4. Label every form field with visible words above the box, not just placeholder text inside it.
  5. Allow zoom on phones. If pinch-zoom doesn't work on your site, your theme is blocking it; that's a one-line fix.
  6. Use real headings. One main heading per page, then sub-headings in order, set with the heading style, not just bold text.
  7. Write clear link text. "See our pricing" beats "Click here".
  8. Caption your videos. Most platforms (YouTube, Facebook, Vimeo) can auto-caption; review and correct them.
  9. Make tap targets big enough. Social icons and menu links packed tightly together cause mis-taps.
  10. Add an accessibility statement with an email or phone number for reporting problems.
